A New Year and a New Start

Welcome to Codex.org.

The content that has been on this site for the last few years has been wiped away. I still have a copy of it, but working more on getting the site to a point where I can post it again. You would be surprised at how much it can take to get a simple blog up that is not running on Wordpress. Instead, I have setup this site using Hugo.

The idea behind going with Wordpress is that it is easy to configure and to get running. There is less technical work required. Mainly because there are 9,342 companies that have defacto Wordpress hosting. So, it is easy to throw together a website and get to hosting. But, for this one, I wanted to keep to something under my own control. And, so now here I am writing this in markdown.

Setting up Hugo

Setting this version of the website has been faster than before. In the past I had decided to try and write all of my site from scratch. And, while that is fun and challenging, it leads to a large amount of nothing ever getting published. So this time around I went with a template.

My first thought was to go with JekyllRB, but I decided to switch it up this time. Jekyll is nice, but there are issues. First, many of the templates have build issues, and gems that are out of date. I tried a number of different tempates, and found the number of errors to be a bit over or well, underwhelming. Instead, I switched it up and decided to go with Hugo.

Hugo is fast and better yet, it is not written in JavaScript. Not that I am a JS hater, but there is something about the entire language and underlying infrastructure. So, getting this up and running took about an hour or so. This was much quicker than I was used to with Jekyll.

About my setup

I would normally run all of this off of Linux, but right now I am running with a new laptop. This is a windows machine, and I am just using it the way it is. That means that I am running Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and doing the hop and skip between systems. This means that I am running VSCode on windows but from WSL. Hugo was installed straight on Debian on WSL and seems to be running fine. I think I could have seen if Hugo would run directly from Windows, but at the time it did not occur to me.

Getting things up and running

So, now I am going to get thiis post up and running. Going to use a simple script to deploy it, and that should be all that I need.

Where is this going

For the short term, I am not sure where I am going to be taking this blog. I am not sure what I am going to be writing about. Wow, that is hard to say. But, it is true. It is very hard to write about technical issues. In fact, I think that we need to have more and more people taking back up writing again. Putting words into the ether and reaching out. Heck, it does not even have to be good, but it needs to get out there.

So, what I am I going to write about? Mostly technical things. I am going to to use another blog for covering my non-technical issues. And for this, the topic will remain tech related. Why, because we need more people writing about technical issues. Will I always have the correct opininion? Definitely not.

What? why would I say that, why, because I am human. We make mistakes. So, I will continue to write, I will put my voice out into the ether, and I will enjoy every minute of it. Because, in this day and age, we need more people yelling into the void. And while I may not yell into the void always, I will speak my mind.

Welcome to the updated Codex.org.

Enjoy the ride.
